Litomyšl

Litomysl is situated in the eastern part of the country. Originally a fortress, the town was founded near by a trade route in 13th century. Dominating for the town is an impressive Renaissance-chateau from 1568 - 1581. Litomysl is also known as a birthplace of the famous composer Bedrich Smetana. Recently, Litomysl came in world news as a place of the meeting of European presidents 1994. Among its famous visitors were also the King and the Queen of Spain 1995.

The chateau complex was included in the UNESCO List of cultural monuments 1999. Litomysl was awarded "Historical Town of the year 2000.

The Renaissance castle, dating from the second half of the 16th century, is an important example of an arcade-castle, which was first developed in Italy. Despite alterations to the interior at the end of the 18th century, it has retained its almost intact Renaissance features including the unique decorations on the facades and gables. It also retains a number of ancillary buildings and gardens. The castle was UNESCO listed in 1999.

Birthplace of Bedrich Smetana

Situated in a former castle brewery, where the famous composer Bedrich Smetana was born on 2 March 1824.

Portmoneum - J. Vachal´s Museum

Josef Vachal is one of the most extraordinary Central European artists of the 20th century. The museum presents Vachal´s wall paintings inspired by Vachal´s interest in mystique, Oriental religion and philosophy. Vachal was a writer interested in free graphics, namely colour woodcutting, painting, and ceramics decoration and painting and cutting decoration of furniture. The work on saving the unique Portmoneum (its financial value is beyond calculation) was financed and organized by Paseka Publishing House.
