Litomyšl

Litomysl is situated in the eastern part of the country. Originally a fortress, the town was founded near by a trade route in 13th century. Dominating for the town is an impressive Renaissance-chateau from 1568 - 1581. Litomysl is also known as a birthplace of the famous composer Bedrich Smetana. Recently, Litomysl came in world news as a place of the meeting of European presidents 1994. Among its famous visitors were also the King and the Queen of Spain 1995.

The chateau complex was included in the UNESCO List of cultural monuments 1999. Litomysl was awarded "Historical Town of the year 2000.
